I began my love of glass as a stained glass artist. I then moved to the North Carolina Mountains where the views were too good to cover. I started thinking about using glass as wall art and for utilitarian pieces such as bowls and table art. Thus began my love affair with kiln-formed glass. Kiln-formed glass behaves like a Chameleon. It is fluid, yet solid; it is transparent and/or opaque; it is flat, yet can morph into endless shapes. It can start colorless or subtle in color, then transform into brilliant, saturated color in the firing process. Perhaps the greatest glass artist of modern times, Dale Chihuly said, “Glass is the most magical of all materials. It transmits light in a special way.”
In most rooms, natural light moves as the day progresses. Mounting glass onto an aluminum panel with space between the glass and the metal results in an explosion of moving colors. This is what I do with my glass wall panels. I enjoy using jewel colors in many of my collections because they are intense and often evoke an intense emotional response. My wall panels and utilitarian pieces span from wild, vivid abstracts to subtle, calming nature scenes. While I am a perfectionist at heart, glass taught me that perfection is in the eyes of the beholder and it gave me permission to infuse spontaneity and freedom of expression in my art. Creating one-of-a-kind pieces of glass art is my calling and passion.
