Joni and Gary Mitchell are both escapees from the world of corporate mayhem.

Gary, a California native, fell in love with opals over 40 years ago. Embracing life changes, he drifted away from his opal hobby. Now, many years later, he once again indulges his passion for this beautiful gemstone.

Joni was born and raised in Cape Canaveral, Florida, just a few miles from the Kennedy Space Center and right on the beach!  Many life adventures later, including eight years in southern California, and a four year stint in Costa Rica, C.A., Joni has returned to her southern roots.

Using their combined skills, the Mitchells collaborate to create classic jewelry designs using opals, semi-precious stone and fine metals. As all opals are unique, each design strives to enhance the individual stone’s characteristics.

Their name, “Spirit Spun,” refers to the many spirits which influence their lives and therefore, their art. These include Mother Nature, love, history and most important, the Divine Spirit.  Spirit Spun Design has a studio in Franklin, North Carolina.

To enhance their self-taught skills, Gary and Joni have completed studies at the William Holland School for Lapidary Arts in Young Harris, Georgia, along with numerous seminars and skill building retreats.
